Vehicle Titles
Important information for getting a vehicle titled in your name.
All vehicles (auto, boat, trailer, etc) model year 1998 to present require a title.
DEALERSHIP SALE
The dealership should issue you a title application or title, even if you buy from outside of Maine. If you don't get one of these from your dealership, contact them to ensure you get one.
PRIVATE SALE
Always make sure that anyone whose name appears on the front of the title signs the back of the title.
If there is a lienholder listed on the front of the title, they will need to stamp or otherwise sign-off in the appropriate spot on the front of the title.
The seller(s) should fill out their portion of the back of the title completely. This includes full name(s), full address, signature(s), date of sale, and current odometer reading.
The buyer(s) needs to fill out their portion of the back of the title completely. This includes full name(s), full address, signature(s), and date of sale.
Have a private sale of a vehicle, trailer, boat? You can print the appropriate form below, or use them as a guideline for your own bill of sale so that you have all the information we need to title and/or register your new purchase.
