Facility Rules

The Greene Transfer Station Rules are subject to change under authorization of the Greene Board of Selectmen. Should any portion of these rules be found invalid for any reason by a court of competent jurisdiction then all portions not found invalid shall remain unaffected and continue in full force and effect.

 

All users of the Transfer Station Facility (the “Facility”) shall be subject to the rules and regulations contained herein and the Town of Greene Solid Waste Disposal and Transfer Station Ordinance.
All users of the facility shall comply with the direction of the Facility Attendants as they pertain to disposal and usage of the facility. These rules have been set forth by the Board of Selectmen. Any questions regarding the rules contained herein of the direction of the attendants should be addressed to the Town Manager or Board of Selectmen.
All vehicles entering the facility must stop and see the attendant at entrance building and must display a valid Transfer Station Permit sticker. Stickers are issued at the Greene Town Office during normal business hours. A temporary permit may be issued to residents utilizing non-residents to deliver materials to the transfer station under special circumstances. Transfer Station Permit Sticker will be issued to year-round and seasonal dwelling property owners as well as (2) family dwellings. Any residential complex larger than 2 units will not be issued permits. Renters of single or dual family dwelling units will be issued a Transfer Station Permit Sticker.
Only household waste generated within the Town of Greene will be accepted at the Facility.
All waste must be bagged, preferably in clear bags. Loose trash is not accepted. 
Bags must not contain any recyclable material as defined herein.
All users of the Facility shall comply with the directions of the Facility attendants.
No contractor generated material is allowed. Resident contractors are limited to their home generated waste only.
 
Children under 12 years of age and all pets must remain in vehicles at all times.
“Dump Picking” is prohibited.
Facility equipment has the right of way at all times.
Greene enforces mandatory recycling. All materials and bags are subject to inspection. Any material not separated for recycling is subject to rejection.
Failure to follow all rules and directions from attendants may result in the prohibition of an individual and/or vehicle from using the Facility.

Acceptable Waste: (Fees May Apply) The following types of waste as defined within will be accepted at the Facility: Household waste, Tires without rims, scrap metal, recyclable waste, furniture, carpeting, construction & demolition debris (no commercial debris), limited amount of brush (no larger than 4 inches in diameter), propane cylinders 1lb or smaller, clean wood & Household Universal Waste.

Unacceptable Waste: The following types of waste, as defined within, will not be accepted at the Facility:
Compostable waste (leaves, grass clippings etc.), limbs larger than 4 inches in diameter, stumps, rocks, dirt & fill, logs (lengths or cut), dead animals & fowl, manure of any kind, animal waste, bricks, cement, asphalt paving, railroad ties, utility poles, ash of any kind, partially burned materials, junk vehicles, propane cylinders (larger than 1lb), asbestos, radioactive waste, hazardous waste, any liquid other than waste oil and antifreeze.
 
Recyclable materials: The following materials are acceptable for recycling:
Cardboard: corrugated, no larger than 3’x4’, cereal boxes, pasta boxes, shoeboxes, clean pizza boxes, etc.
Paper: newspapers (clean and dry), junk mail, catalogues, soft & hard cover books, brown bags, magazines & inserts, etc.
Plastics: Containers #1 - #7 (milk jugs, drink bottles, bleach & detergent, shampoo, etc.) and rigids laundry  baskets, buckets, totes etc.
Plastics: Only #2. Rinsed and flattened with caps removed.
Glass: Clear only. Rinsed with caps removed.
Tin Cans: Rinsed, labels removed and flattened.
 
Fee Schedule: The following fees shall be assessed for each item disposed.
 
Mattress & box spring set $15
Couch $15
Stuffed chair or recliner $10
Carpet, up to 180 sq. ft. $15
Full size pickup construction debris/shingles - $25/half size - $15
Full size pickup w/sides, construction debris/shingles $50
Trailer with 64 cubic ft. capacity of construction debris/shingles - $25
Tires up to 21” $5 each (limited)
Truck tires 20”-24” $20 each
Equipment & tractor tires $30 each
Brush $5 per pickup/$10 up to 16' trailer
Appliances with Freon $20
 
Household solid waste from within the Town of Greene recyclable and limited amounts of brush, as defined herein, will continue to be accepted free of charge. All fees must be paid at time of disposal to the transfer station attendant.
 
No charge for TV’s, laptops, computers, printers, flat screen monitors.
 
Household Universal Waste: The following items and others as may be declared by the State of Maine constitute Household Universal waste. Please notify attendant prior to disposal.
Fluorescent bulbs, lead acid batteries, oil, antifreeze, items containing mercury (including thermostats), ballasts containing PCB’s.
 
Hazardous Waste: The following items and others as may be declared by the State of Maine, constitute Hazardous waste, and may not be disposed of at the Facility. Please ask the attendant for disposal options.
Oil based paints & stains, solvents & thinners, swimming pool chemicals, pesticides, roofing tar, driveway sealer (oil based), asbestos, radioactive waste.
Construction & demolition debris: It includes but is not limited to building materials, sheetrock, vinyl siding, insulation (must be bagged), asphalt shingles & roofing materials, wood (cut in 4’ lengths or 2’ x 4’ sections and placed in the proper container). It does not include asbestos products and other special wastes, which must be disposed of at an approved hazardous waste site. Please see attendant before disposing. (Furniture, carpet, etc. are not defined as construction debris)
Freon containers: * Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, water coolers, and other items containing Freon are accepted at the Facility. Items with Freon removed by a Qualified Technician and have a certificate affixed to the appliance are free to dispose of the item or appliance. Items or appliances with Freon included has a cost of $20 to dispose of at the Facility.
Metal Goods: Metal goods should be placed on the metal pile. All fuel, gas, oil, other liquids, and batteries must be removed prior to disposal. Fuel oil tanks and metal drums must be cut in half or have one end removed and wiped clean before disposal. Please notify attendant prior to disposal.
 
Brush: Brush up to 4” in diameter may be deposited upon the brush piles. (No leaves, saw dust, logs, stumps, or limbs larger than 4 inches in diameter). Limited to two (2) full size pickup truck or trailer loads per week.
Fees paid to attendant at time of disposals.
 
Commercial Haulers & Contractors: Commercial haulers/Contractors are prohibited from disposing of waste at the Facility. They are defined as individuals or corporations who profit or otherwise contract for hire to pick up waste material from individuals within the Town of Greene for disposal at the Facility.
