WHERE / WHEN:

WHY: Sabattus Dam is Classified by Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) as a “Significant Hazard”
Background - In 2014, an inspection of the Sabattus Pond Dam led Maine DEP to classify the dam as a “significant hazard”
- DEP recommended the issues be addressed as further degradation could lead to an order to open the dam fully and permanently – lowering the water level by at least 8 feet – effectively leaving only a narrow water channel from north to south
|
How can you help? - Attend any of the public hearings to understand the critical nature of the reconstruction/safety upgrade effort and have your questions answered
- Inform other stakeholders to ensure they are aware of the project and the potential negative impacts to the lake and watershed if not pursued
- Vote ”YES” to support the bond during your FY-24/25 Town Meeting
|
Funds Required - Reconstruction/safety upgrade costs are estimated at $1.155M (or $385K from each town of Greene, Sabattus & Wales)
- Current plan is to secure a bond to fund the reconstruction effort with the total cost to be split equally between the towns of Greene, Sabattus, and Wales
- State & federal grants have been and will continue to be pursued
